What Are You Obsessed With?!
What Are You Obsessed With?!
During the last week, I met with three entrepreneurs who have one common issue, they have several ideas, but they are not sure which to start with! Well! Guys, please think again. The fact that you have several ideas is not good at all. It says that you don’t get it. Great entrepreneurs do not focus on an “Idea”. Great entrepreneurs follow their own obsession.
Define your sphere, your concept, or your message to the world, and then ideas will just come to help you steer your effort in that direction, and you will never wonder what to do! If you have a clear target, then what or how to start will be clearer, and you will be flexible enough to change directions or experiment several “Related Ideas” to follow your “One” dream business along the way.
To simplify this, ask yourself, what would be the business in which you would work for life, I mean, you would spend your life in? What’s your ultimate dream business? “There” is where you should start. Next, if there are any other ideas in your mind that are not related to this dream, just forget about them all. Whatever you start must be directly related to your passion, obsession and dream, even if you want to try several approaches “Related Ideas” along the way.
If your dream business is too complicated and too big to be implemented now, then try to simplify it as much as possible, start with the simplest ever version of it, or with the easiest part of it, then work on evolving it gradually. If you don’t start now on simplifying and implementing it, it will get more and more complicated over time. You will keep evolving it in your mind, yet, making it much more harder to be implemented!
In the first meeting with entrepreneurs, I usually keep pushing to know what are they obsessed with, what’s their sphere! If the startup they are working on is within this sphere, then I take the discussion to the next level. If not, then I advise the entrepreneur to re-think it, and come back later, when he/she figures out his/her obsession.
Please don’t ever say: I will work on this “Quick” idea first, then I will exit and work on my dream. This does not work. If you go to VCs raising money for such an idea, they will “Feel” that you are not really into what you’re presenting, and most probably they will decline the deal, because investors invest in You not in your idea.
