Random late night ideas: After tossing and turning for hours, I gave up on sleep and started writing this — only to stay up even longer! Anyway, if you’re like me with no hobbies other than geeking out over startups and investments and you want to participate in a fun community project, just for the fun of it, join me in launching MENA SSE (menaSSE.xyz)

I’d love to collaborate with fellow startup and investment enthusiasts (volunteers) to build MENA SSE (MENA Simulated Startup Exchange) as a fun, educational, and impactful experiment. It’s a platform where participants can trade stocks of tech startups across the MENA region — virtually, of course!

I know this has been done before in other markets as a business idea or a game, and that it’s one of the most obvious ideas out there, and it didn’t quite become a viable business.

But here’s the thing: we’re not doing this as a business idea — this is just for fun! For us, this is a passion project and an exciting way to engage with startups and the MENA ecosystem. It’s a sandbox for aspiring VCs, angel investors, and startup enthusiasts to test their instincts, learn, and have fun without the pressure of making it a commercial venture.

I don’t know how we’re going to manage this community project and organize tasks — it might turn into a nightmare to organize! But hey, let’s try to work on something together as a community and see how it goes. If we fail to organize it, then, well, we tried! 😊

Here’s what I’ve been thinking:

• Simulated Startup Trading: Users can “long” or “short” startups based on whether they think the company will hit its next funding round with a higher valuation — or not. Think a startup’s got the magic sauce? Long it. Skeptical? Short it. It’s all about testing your instincts!
• Stock Price Calculation: Each startup will start with the same number of shares. We’ll calculate the initial stock price based on the latest funding round valuation. As news and updates roll in, the virtual trading will drive the stock prices up or down, mimicking how markets react.
• Track Record as Aspiring Investors: This platform is for anyone who wants to try their hand at predicting startup success. Whether you’re an aspiring VC or just love tracking the latest startup news, this is your chance to build a track record — public or anonymous. If you’re good, you’ll earn badges like “Top 100 Investors” or “Best Performing Investors.”
• Crowd-Sourced Sentiment: The virtual market will reflect what the community thinks — who’s thriving, who’s struggling — all driven by real news and speculation.
• Data-Driven Insights: Over time, we’ll gather data on how a variety of events — like funding rounds, leadership changes, product launches, partnerships, mergers, expansions, and even broader economic trends — affect startup valuations. These insights could be gold for VCs, founders, and investors, offering fresh perspectives on what drives startup success in the MENA region.

How will it all start?

• Phase 1: Setup & Initial Startups: We’ll kick things off with a curated selection of MENA startups, each with an initial stock price based on their latest funding round.
• Phase 2: Community-Driven Trading: As you and others start trading based on news and predictions, prices will shift, and the virtual market will come to life.
• Phase 3: Expansion & Features: As we grow, more startups, features, and analytics will be added so you can refine your strategies and dive deeper.

Volunteers Needed:

• Product Management: Help shape the platform and its features.
• Coding: Develop the core platform, build functionalities, and handle integrations.
• DevOps: Manage infrastructure, ensure scalability, and streamline the development process.
• UI/UX Design: Make the experience intuitive and fun.
• Marketing and Community Building: Spread the word and bring startup enthusiasts to the platform.
• Data Science and Analytics: Work on the mechanics for valuation tracking, predictions, and sentiment.
• Legal and Compliance: Keep us on the safe side of regulations.
• Startup Enthusiasts and Mentors: Anyone who’s excited to test, give feedback, and help improve the platform!
